When the first Kick-Ass came out people praised it's thoroughly entertaining and crude nature, and although the films sequel Kick-Ass 2 does deliver what fans of the first film are hoping for the second instalment never really reaches the heights it's predecessor achieved. This does not mean Kick-Ass 2 is a bad film but if you are expecting massive things from the film you may come out slightly disappointed.
The sequel sees Dave step back into the Kick-Ass suit and join 'Justice Forever' a gang of vigilantes who are led by former Mafia hitman Colonel Stars and Stripes. Mindy/ Hit-Girl decides to retire from her Hit-Girl persona after being urged by new guardian Marcus to try and live her childhood. Chris D'Amico/ Red Mist hungry for revenge after Kick-Ass murdered his father at the end of the first film, becomes the world's first supervillain and reinvents himself as The Motherf****r. Like Kick-Ass the Motherf****r also acquires a gang.

All the acting is pretty decent here with Taylor-Johnson and Moretz turning in pretty good performances as Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl, but the stand out performances here are from Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Jim Carrey as The Motherf****r and Colonel Stars and Stripes. Carrey's the one you want to see more of and is criminally underused as born again Christian the Colonel. When he is in screen you are always looking at him, even if the main character is on screen with him. Mintz-Plasse on the other hand is in the film a lot and the film benefits a lot from this. Although he performs some incredibly evil acts he is probably the only thing about the film that's funny and probably goes through the most satisfying arc of the three main characters.
The one of the arcs however is where Kick-Ass 2 slips up. Hit-Girl goes through the cliche coming of age story where she struggles to fit in her new high school. Although the scenes where she tries to fit in are not exactly awful and it is an important event the film they feel slightly boring in an otherwise exciting film. The film's problem may also lie in the plot structure where it takes too long to pit Kick-Ass and The Motherf****r against each other it leaves you in anticipation too long to where the excitement wears off.
However the fight scene at the end does not disappoint and neither do any of the others, each of them are fast, exciting and bloody. Bloody is the important word here as it's a very constant theme in Kick-Ass 2. Jim Carrey garnered the film some controversy by refusing to help promote the film, due to it's violent nature. The film is pretty violent, but it would not feel like a Kick-Ass 2 without it therefore I don't think it is unneeded in the film and actually adds to the fight scenes quite a lot and makes the film look more realistic. Also the film is much less violent than the graphic novel it is based off of.
It's easy to ignore Kick-Ass 2 as it's not as good as it's predecessor however the awesome fight scenes, decent performances and it's unique nature to any other film on the market means the film should grab your attention and money.
I give Kick-Ass 2 an 8 out of 10.
